Bubbles–I always like to start off with bubbles because it makes a great ice breaker with kids. It was especially fitting today because our letter was…B! For today’s storytime, I chose books, songs, and rhymes that featured numbers and counting.
Opening Song: Hands are clapping/Hey Hey How are You? (with ukulele)
Welcome song: Willoughby Wallaby Woo (with ukulele) These songs (along with certain other aspects of storytime) are the same each week to establish a routine. Over time, kids learn what to expect and become more and more confident in their ability to participate and contribute.
Book 1: Pete the Cat and his four groovy buttons by Eric Litwin and James Dean. It is a truth universally acknowledged that reading Pete the Cat books to preschoolers is about the closest thing to being a rockstar that any librarian (well, this one, at least) is likely to experience. My group today was no exception. They really REALLY love Pete.
Rhyme/song: Bubble Bubble Pop. See the song demonstrated by the ladies at Jbrary here. The idea for the prop comes from The Neighborhood Librarian Takes the City.
Rhyme/Song: 5 Little Monkeys. This template came from Karen at Prekinders–thanks, Karen!
Book 2: One, Two, Buckle my Shoe by Jane Cabrera. We looked to see if anyone had a buckle on their shoe, talked about the bunny and the birthday cake in the story.
Activity: Scarves. Wind, oh Wind/Peekaboo/Shoo Fly/Jack in the box/Popcorn Kernels/Wind, oh wind
Closing game: Rhyme cube. We got Two Little Dickey Birds again!
Closing songs: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star/ABC (with uke)
Goodbye Song: Hands are waving/Bye, Bye We’ll Miss You (with uke)
Craft: decorate your own shirt with button stickers.
